Tips to Keep Your Pets Cool

It's getting hot out there, y'all.
We are heading into the "dog days of summer" and the temps are staggering these days. With this heat in mind, we need to ensure our pets are keeping it cool.
Our dog and cat family members are more susceptible to these higher temperatures because not only do they run at higher body temperatures (100.5 to 102.5 degrees Fahrenheit) they also do not sweat like people do. They rely solely on heat exchange through breathing/panting for dogs and self-grooming in cats to evaporate water and release heat. Because of this, they can easily overheat and suffer a heat stroke.
During these intense summer days make sure your pets have plenty of shade, cool water access and ensure they are not in any areas or enclosures where they cannot get out of the heat. Please do not leave any pet unattended in a vehicle that is not running without the air conditioning on, and always make sure your pet has exited the vehicle before closing the door.
And let's not forget our backyard birds. Chickens are extremely impacted by the summer heat. A chicken's body temperature runs at 104 to 106 degrees Fahrenheit normally! So, when outside temperatures are high, we need to ensure they have shady areas, cool water and in some cases fans with misters help keep their temperatures down. The use of automatic waterers is also beneficial as many chickens will not drink water over 80 degrees Fahrenheit. With automatic waterers, this ensures a constant new stream of fresh cool water available.

August is National Immunization Awareness Month!
You are probably familiar with vaccines like those to protect against rabies, distemper, feline leukemia, and other core shots given to puppies and kittens and boostered throughout their lifetimes. But there are also vaccines for flea and tick protection, heartworm prevention, osteoarthritis, and more.
This month, the Comer Vet team is highlighting the importance of vaccines in our pets’ lives. If your pet receives ANY vaccine from Comer Vet between Aug. 1 and 31, you’ll be entered to win a basket full of pet supplies and treats!
Meet the Staff: Carson, vet assistant
 | Meet Carson! He’s been with Comer Vet for about a year and a half. Carson started part-time while he was in undergrad, and now he’s a full-fledged member of the team. He also spends every Monday with our sister clinic, Custom Livestock Solutions LLC. He lives out our motto by trying to understand the needs and goals of each patient, tailoring care on an individual basis. This is also why he feels called to vet med: It gives him the opportunity to make a meaningful difference while building connections with people, animals, and the community he serves. When Carson’s not at work, he’s with his dogs, Wrangler and Winston; working on |
home projects; and spending time with family and friends. He also enjoys fishing, golfing, and power sports.
Carson has been a great asset to the Comer Vet team, and we’ve enjoyed watching his confidence grow! He’s always willing to step in and has even taken on tasks such as building customized equipment, like the apparatus we use for certain open-mouth procedures. Y’all be sure to tell him hello the next time you see him at the clinic!
