May is Pet Parent Appreciation Month at Comer Vet
There's a little treat waiting for you after your appointment this month!

When picking an exotic pet, it is important to research what that pet will need as far as food, housing, and potential light sources. As with all animals, their nutrition is vital to living a long and healthy life. Many species have specific nutritional requirements: guinea pigs need vitamin C, rabbits need a lot of roughage like leafy greens and hay, reptiles need calcium added to their diets. These are just a few examples.
With over 3,000 reptile species in the pet trade, many of those require vastly different housing requirements. This could be a species that dwells in a desert habitat and thus needs a lower humidity, and those that live in tropical need high-humidity habitats. So, when picking these reptiles as pets, make sure you have the proper setup to house them in. This involves lighting requirements as well. Many if not most of our amazing reptile pets have requirements for UVA/B lighting as well, so this will need to be provided for them when housed indoors. If at all possible, when the weather is suitable it is best to allow your reptile pets to go outside and bask in the sun for at least 30 minutes a day. Not directly in the sun, so allow them a shady place as well.
If you plan on adding one of these uniquely diverse and amazing exotic pets to your family, please reach out to us at Comer Veterinary Hospital. We will be more than happy to assist you with any questions or concerns you may have.

The Comer Vet team is starting a new tradition. May is going to be Pet Parent Appreciation Month!
What does that mean? Just like human parents get honored on Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, pet parents should get some lovin’! However, we know it’s a little hard to send your dog out shopping, so the Comer Vet team decided to step in. We’ve got an exclusive piece of Comer Vet swag for you this month — custom branded sunglasses, as modeled above! Your pair of sunglasses will be wrapped up with a special discount coupon you can use on your next visit to Comer Vet, too, as a thank-you for all you do to take care of your dogs, cats, exotics, and hobby farm pets!
Simply stop by the reception desk after your appointment this month to get your little treat from us. Please limit one per pet parent, while supplies last!

Partner in Education ![]() Comer Vet is proud to be a Partner in Education with Colbert Elementary School for the 2024 to 2025 school year. Science teacher Ms. Heath invited us to speak to the fourth and fifth grades this spring and share with them a little about what it’s like to be a veterinarian. Dr. Chamlee and her trusty sidekick, Dutch, jumped at the opportunity! Read and see more from our visit in this post. | Vaccine Clinic Recap ![]() What a great day it was at the annual Comer Vet low-cost vaccine clinic we hosted to benefit Madison County 4-H! This year’s event on April 19 brought 48 dogs and cats in to get their rabies and other annual vaccines, and we were able to raise $1,000 for our local 4-H’ers. Thank you to everyone who brought your pets out! We saw some familiar faces and met a whole crew of new patients that we can’t wait to care for. Check out the full photo album here! |

Congratulations to Kovu, winner of the March “Pets Around Town” photo contest!
The May photo contest theme is “Pet Tricks”! Does your pet have a special trick or silly antic that you’ve trained them to do? Maybe they sit really well or give the best handshakes!
Take a horizontal photo of your pet(s) that showcases this theme and send it to us by May 23! Entries can be submitted via DM on the Comer Vet Facebook page or Instagram. Voting will run the 26th through 30th.
