Welcome to the New Year …

A lot of us set new goals for the new year, whether they are diet related, exercise related, or other things we want to improve on. While we are setting goals for ourselves, we need to think about our animals, too.

If you set a goal to be more active or get more exercise, form a plan that can include your pet. That way, you have an accountability partner. Exercise will help both you and your pet. I’m sure that your pet will gladly remind you it’s time to spend time with them.  Make sure to start slow and work your way up so your pet can get used to the exercise with you.

Also, we are seeing an uptick in patients having weight problems. If your pet has weight problems it could be diet related, exercise related, or medical related. Set up an exam with at Comer Vet to have a good workup and see what area that you need to focus on.

Focus on a good, healthy diet for yourself and your pet, too. Feeding table foods that are high in fats or seasonings are not healthy for your pet. This can lead to weight gain, gastritis, pancreatitis, and diarrhea. These foods can really upset their systems. Instead of a high-calorie treat, try things like pieces of ice, baby carrots, green beans, etc. Or better yet, spend time with them, petting them and loving them. So, while you are setting goals for yourself, set healthy food and weight goals for your pets.

It is very important because they can get many of the same diseases we can get, such as diabetes, joint problems (extra weight doesn’t help those joints), kidney disease, liver disease, gallbladder problems, bladder stones, high blood pressure … and the list goes on. Good diet and exercise is essential to your pet’s health.

So, with the new year plan, for a new you and your pet, too!  It’s a win-win. If you need help with your pet’s diet or exercise plan, set up an appointment and we can help guide you. And remember, our pets will be very good accountability partners, reminding you it’s time to spend time with them.

Comer Vet After Hours

December was one to remember at Comer Vet!

We had a great weekend welcoming Santa Paws to town on Friday night, Dec. 5. Fifty pets came through the clinic, and our friends at Maggie’s Café in Comer catered cookies and hot chocolate. Saturday dawned with a very chilly but spirited city Christmas parade. We had a trailer full of staff, family members, and furry friends waving and handing out candy! The weekend concluded with our joint holiday party alongside the team from our sister clinic, Custom Livestock Solutions. We’re so grateful that R.G. Strickland Mercantile let us reserve their space for our annual dinner and gift exchange this year. Want to see all the photos from Santa’s visit to the clinic? Find them here on Facebook!

Meet the Staff: Jessica, practice manager and veterinary technician

Jessica’s been with Comer Veterinary Hospital for 12 years, and the last six of those have been as our practice manager. As a licensed vet tech, working with animals has always been in the cards for her: she fondly remembers writing a report in elementary school about growing up to be a “vegetarian” to help kittens and puppies! Her day-to-day is a little different than what she dreamed up, but always exciting. She has a wide array of tasks in the clinic, doing pretty much everything except the vets’ job.

It’s no wonder after work Jessica loves to take in all the cuddles from her French bulldogs, Repo and Laila! When it comes to “care with community in mind”, Jessica tries to treat customers like family and their pets as her own.
