Honoring Our Vet Techs & Assistants
Plus: Take part in our October community food drive!

No, she’s not going to veterinary school. No, she doesn’t plan to be a veterinarian.
She’s actually in school to be a veterinary technician, or more appropriately named, a veterinary nurse. She is the unsung hero of your pet’s care. She’s the one behind the scenes ensuring your veterinarian can do their day-to-day job. She’s responsible for obtaining diagnostics — whether it’s drawing blood, collecting urine, processing lab samples, or taking radiographs. She’s the one who carries out treatments — administering medications at doctor’s orders, placing IV catheters and maintaining fluid pumps, cleaning wounds, changing bandages, feeding and watering patients, and changing bedding or walking patients. She is responsible for managing the surgical suite — from supplies set up, to anesthesia monitoring and recovery, to knowing which surgical pack and suture I prefer, to adjusting the table and surgical light 47 times each, until they’re just right for me to see and reach my surgical site. She’s the one stocking and cleaning the vet truck, doing laundry and medication inventory, maintaining equipment, helping with records and billing, and driving so that I can respond to messages and phone calls. She’s the one who remembers your pet’s preference — that your cat prefers a certain type of blanket when boarding, or how your dog likes their belly rubs.
She knows my gas station pick-me-up preference after a long day, and never complains when I add another emergency to the books or call for an early start to the day.
At Comer Veterinary Hospital and Custom Livestock Solutions, we have some absolutely wonderful Veterinary Technicians and Veterinary Assistants, and our veterinarians are beyond blessed to work beside them. Please help us celebrate them the week of Oct. 13 through 17 by giving them an extra thank-you or showing your own token of appreciation for the care they help provide your animals. We truly could not do our jobs without them, and they deserve to be celebrated and appreciated every day.
P.S. The primary nurse who keeps my vet truck running just happens to be one of the biggest heart women I know, so this was in part an ode to her. Don’t let the wording fool you — our male nurses are rockstars in their own right.

It’s scary to go hungry … so Comer Vet’s stepping in to help fill the hunger gap!
We’re hosting a community food drive during October to support the Madison County Food Bank! Bring nonperishable food and personal hygiene items by the clinic, and each item donated earns you an entry to win a goodie basket! The goodie basket will include a gift certificate for services at Comer Vet, as well as swag and pet items.

Congratulations to Athena, winner of the August “Candid Camera” photo contest!
The October photo contest theme is “Scarecrows in the Cities”! Each year, Madison County hosts a county-wide harvest decoration extravaganza where small businesses put up scarecrows around town. We invite you to take a photo of your pet with any of the scarecrows — or, if you’re outside of Madison County, fall seasonal decorations put up in your city!
Take a horizontal photo of your pet(s) that showcases this theme and send it to us by Oct. 23! Entries can be submitted via DM on the Comer Vet Facebook page or Instagram. Voting will run the 26th through 30th.
